How To Make These Stylish Tile Planters

Being a plant hoarder sometimes you just run out of things to put them in! That’s when you have to get crafty and I have found several fun ways to make new and cute planters. I’ll be sharing lots of these methods throughout the DIY series. This first one was inspired by last weeks polish pottery ‘Things We Love’ post. We will be taking 4”-6” decorative tiles and turning them into a unique and stylish planter, perfect for any home! This project is simple to make and only takes a few hours (for the glue to dry).

Here is what you will need for this project:

  •  4 pieces of square tiles 4”-6” (5 if you want one for the bottom instead of wood)
  • Ceramic Glue
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Adhesive Cork Bumpers

Optional:

  • Corner clamp or vise
  • Plastic for the inside of the planter
  • scrap piece of wood for base

*If you are using a wood bottom you may need to have the wood cut at the store if you do not own a saw. Double check your measurements to ensure they are correct.

You can find tiles HERE for $1+. You can also check your local hardware and tile shops!

Glue suggestions:

  •  j-b weld clearweld quick-setting epoxy- J-B Weld is a multi-purpose two-part epoxy that sets to a hard, permanent bond on a number of applications including; ceramic & porcelain, tile, glass, wood and most plastics. Set time of 5 minutes and cures in 1 hour to a transparent and clear bond. Drys clear
  • Gorilla Super Glue 15 Gram- Versatile: Bonds plastic, wood, metal, ceramic, rubber, leather, paper, and more. Fast-setting: Dries in 10-45 seconds, no clamping required.Dries clear.
  • Loctite Ultra Gel Control Super Glue- The loctite Ultra Gel Control Super Glue is a very versatile super glue. You can use it in almost any material including metal, plastic, rubber, leather, ceramic and wood. It will work perfectly on any surface and give you the utmost convenience. Sets in 5 minuten cures in 24 hours. Dries clear.

Directions

  1. Apply a strip of glue to the edge of one tile and press it to the inside of another. Make sure the edges line up evenly. You may use a vise to ensure that both sides are even and let sit for 5 minutes or until glue is dry.
  1. Once dry you may attach another tile. If you are using a vice repeat step 1 and let dry you will have 2 90 degree corners.
  1. Attach the last tile ensuring each side is even standing upright to let dry.    If you are using the vise simply apply glue to both sides of one corner and attach both pieces standing up right.
  1. While the glue is drying you may paint or stain your wood (some stains take hours to dry so be aware of the dry time on your stain)
  1. Sand all sides of the planter to remove excess glue.
  1. Finally attach the wood or tile bottom with glue and let dry. Add bumpers to each corner of the wood to protect your shelves.

Because your planter may not be 100% waterproof I suggest taking a plastic bag (such as a shopping bag) and place it inside the planter leaving space between the bag and top of the planter (so you can’t see it when it is done).

This project can be done with any size tile but I find that the 4”-6” are the easiest to work with.

I Hope you enjoyed this project!
